During 2012, the Kennedy Space Center celebrates its 50th anniversary. KSC started on the Merritt Island side of the Banana River after getting property there in the early 1960s. They began developing plans for Launch Complex 39 facilities. the NASA KSC administrative building opened formally on May 26, 1965.
It was created to meet the changing needs of America's manned space program.
The spaceport has been the departure gate for every single American Space Mission, and advanced scientific space craft. The center is a vital rule as NASA'S processing and launch center.
The center, located on Merritt Island, Florida, is roughly 34 miles long and 6 miles wide. 13,100 people worked in the center in 2011 alone. The Kennedy Space Center has sent some pretty famous launches. Examples are:

The Merritt ISland National Wildlife Refuge was opened as an overlay of the John F. Kennedy Space Center in 1963. It has a variety of habitats including saltwater estuaries and marshes, coastal dunes, freshwater impoundments, scrub, pine flatwoods, and more.
